Major modular housing scheme reaches halfway point
Onward and carbon zero housebuilder Starship Group have reached the halfway point in their first housing project together, delivering 13 affordable and highly energy efficient homes at Greenleas in Wallasey.
Using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), all homes are being assembled – rather than built – on site, using a system of large panels constructed at Starship’s Wirral Waters factory. This ‘panelised’ system allows homes to be built in a fraction of traditional timescales, with less waste created and better quality control, while creating a smaller carbon footprint.
All homes at Greenleas will be highly energy efficient and feature a range of low carbon technologies, including solar panels and air source heat pumps, to reduce the energy demands of residents and ensure homes are more affordable to run in the long term.
Once complete, all 13 new homes will be made available through Rent-to-Buy with Onward Living, Onward’s affordable home ownership brand. Rent-to-Buy allows customers to rent their home at an affordable rate, while they save for a deposit to buy it outright.
Onward Homes is one of the largest providers of social housing based in the North West, owning or managing 327 homes in Wallasey and 35,000 homes across the region.
Stephen Heverin, Director of Growth & Regeneration at Onward, said:
“We’re extremely pleased to see the rapid progress at Greenleas. Starship’s innovative system is a great example of the benefits from MMC, delivering high quality homes that meet local demand, in a fraction of traditional housebuilding timescales.
“Not only will these new homes help people take their first steps on the local property ladder through affordable home ownership, they will also be more affordable to run in the long term and tread lighter on the local environment through embracing low carbon technologies.”
Dave Dargan, Co-founder and CEO of Starship, said:
“Starship, in collaboration with Onward Homes, is committed to building a better, more sustainable future by delivering carbon-zero homes. Wallasey is renowned for its accessible property market, therefore I have no doubt Greenelas will become a welcomed addition to the local area, meeting housing demands while making a positive impact on the environment.
“Greenleas is a testament to the shared commitment of Starship and Onward Homes in creating modern, eco-friendly homes with sustainability at their core. We are excited to see Greenleas progress, enriching the lives of its residents and setting a new standard for carbon-zero housing”.
