We supported Chorley Council’s skip day in our Mendip neighbourhood, and alongside customers, helped to clear fly tipping and clean up the area.

West Lancashire

Customers in Ormskirk and Scarisbrick told us that they were not satisfied with the standard of communal cleaning and grounds maintenance services. At the beginning of this year, we brought our environmental services inhouse, with these moving from contractors over to Onward Environmental. Customers here have told us that they are pleased with the services and have seen improvements now that they are delivered inhouse.    

Blackburn

Thanks to a grant from the Fund, Sustainability Living CIC has helped to educate children on the alternative energy and planning needed to develop towns and raise awareness of local career opportunities.  

VOICE Boulevard Centre in Blackburn also received funding to expand their Breakfast Club initiative through the Fund.

Through a partnership with local Police, our Neighbourhoods and Safer Neighbourhoods Teams are improving how we respond to antisocial behaviour.  

In Yates Fold and Honeyhole, we have worked with Blackburn and Darwen Borough Council to improve waste management and tackle fly tipping.   

Hyndburn

Enabling people to be their best 

We welcomed nine Year 11 students from Hyndburn Academy on a two-day work experience placement where they spent time with different Onward teams such as Neighbourhoods and Repairs to learn about job opportunities in the housing sector and apprenticeships at Onward.

Thanks to a grant from the Fund, Accrington Wildcats Rugby Club are delivering an equality project that aims to embed inclusivity in the sport and will see a focus on the recruitment of female, minority ethnic and disabled volunteers and players. The funding will also enable the club to increase its training schedule through an investment in mobile floodlights and capacity for community gatherings to enhance social cohesion, inclusivity and belonging across the borough.     

During Mental Health Awareness Week, our 1st Call Team invited the local community in Hyndburn to get fishing for wellbeing. The event, led by volunteers, saw 16 local people with different abilities come together to relax, enjoy the fresh air, de-stress and escape the hustle and bustle of modern life. 1st Call have also provided funding for volunteers to complete Level 2 Angling qualifications, which will enable them to teach and coach others at future events.

We have worked with Hyndburn Council and Stepping Stones on their ABEN project, a homelessness reduction initiative, by helping five people with permanent homes. We will continue to work on the initiative in the coming months and offer more homes to those in need.  

Our Lockside Walk development of 127 new homes in Clayton-le-Moors is also taking shape thanks to our contractors, Watson Homes, and will offer a range of affordable housing on the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The first Shared Ownership and Rent to Buy homes are now available via Onward Living. 

Since April this year, we have made improvements to our existing homes in Hyndburn and Ribble Valley through an energy efficiency project to make 81 homes warmer, quieter and more affordable. A total of 126 homes will benefit from the project.  

During this time, we have also installed 170 new kitchens, 131 new bathrooms, 60 new roofs, 268 new doors and 35 new boilers, as well as installing new windows in 147 homes across Lancashire.

When customers told us that fly tipping was an issue in our Huncoat neighbourhood, we held a joint visit with Hynburn Borough Council and cusotomers which resulted in more bins being given to those living in the area.  

We also hosted neighbourhood inspections in our Clayton-le-Moors, Laneside and Springhill neighbourhoods where we spoke with our customers and local residents to improve issues with fly tipping, ground maintenance and car parking.  

Preston

Enabling people to be their best 

We have supported the weekly Homework Club hosted by The Foxton Centre which is helping young people progress with English, maths and other subjects. 

Our 1st Call Team are delivering the Move Forward project in Preston, which is helping local people aged 25 and over discover a life they’ll love by helping them to enhance skills, boost confidence, find the right training and volunteering opportunities, whilst also supporting with employment and childcare advice. 

We supported our partners at the Foxton Centre during their World Homeless Day event and over in Clitheroe, our Neighbourhood and Social Investment Teams attend a fortnightly event at the Olive Branch Café to give advice on housing and financial support.

We recently upgraded to the full fire alarm system at our Lonsdale Chase scheme in Preston. Our Older Persons and Property Services teams were joined by contractors Openview at an Afternoon Tea event to thank residents for their cooperation and donated £1,000 to the scheme’s social fund.

In Longridge, colleagues from across Onward came together to host an event for customers who helped to clean up their neighbourhood and shared their views with us around local issues.  

We also hosted several skip days across neighbourhoods in Preston and alongside customers, helped to clear fly tipping and clean up the area. 

Through a continued partnership with the council’s Community Safety Team, we have improved how we respond to local cases of antisocial behaviour.

Thanks to a grant from the Fund, we have supported Ribble Valley Foodbank and their Olive Branch Community Café, which helps support people in need across the area. As well as support with food, visitors to the café can access help with housing, employment, money advice and health services.

Our Social Investment, Neighbourhoods and Older Persons Teams recently worked with contractor Equans to transform the communal gardens at Showley Court in Ribble Valley. Customers also got involved at the planting day, which saw hundreds of flowers planted across the scheme. 

South Ribble

Our development partner, Keepmoat Homes, has created four new roles and 11 apprenticeships as part of their commitment to social value.

On the outskirts of Leyland, our Farrington Mews development with Keepmoat has proven consistently popular with people looking for a more affordable route onto the local property ladder. Customers have already moved into 138 homes, with a further 18 homes available over the next two years through Affordable Rent and Shared Ownership.
